6 Tips to Build Your Unique Brand Voice

Own your voice. Own your power.

It sounds simple, and yet, one of the biggest challenges people face in the foundational stage of building their business is identifying and claiming their voice - the voice that people associate with your brand.

Here’s a common experience:

You’re an expert at your craft. Like, really good and confident about what you do.

Then you decide to hang up your shingle, using that expertise to help you grow a business that enables greater fulfillment, freedom and meaningful contribution.

You know your lane, but you’re confused about the business side of things.

So you turn to the trusted search engines, scroll social media, and start consuming other experts’ content to soak up everything you think you need to know to run a profitable, sustainable business.

Along the way, you find two or three experts who really capture your attention, and you binge their blogs, podcasts and live videos.

“Do it like they do - because clearly they’ve figured it out!” you think.

Here’s the problem: Just because “it” worked for them doesn’t mean it will work for you.

What sells in your business is YOU and the unique combination that you bring into it.

Your power as a business owner is fully realized when you step into this belief that there are countless people out there who want exactly who you are and what you have to offer… and this is also when your business begins to blossom.

What is IT that I’m referring to?

Your Unique Brand Voice (UBV).

So, how do you develop your UBV at a time when you haven’t yet built confidence in your business?

Start here. Below, you’ll learn 6 tips that will build and strengthen your UBV – establishing yourself as the expert you are, differentiating your brand from others in similar spaces, and enabling you to share your gifts in the ways only you can:

TIP #1: IDENTIFY + LIVE YOUR CORE VALUES - Your core values represent your business in a multitude of ways - reflecting who you are, what you stand for, how you communicate and how you serve. Identifying what they are and living them daily sends a powerful message that signals to your ideal clients what’s most important to you.

TIP #2: ESTABLISH + ENFORCE BOUNDARIES - This one may not seem obvious; however, establishing and activating your boundaries is part of stepping into your own way of operating your business. They let people who interact with your brand know what is and isn’t welcome in your business; and for many people, this becomes something that is quite attractive to their ideal clients. (Oh! Family dinners are important to you, too?!)

If you’re a newer coach, consultant or service provider who is struggling to create boundaries, know that this is one of those areas that takes some practice to establish. Especially if you are coming from more of a corporate environment, enforcing boundaries may feel unfamiliar to you. (“What? I can just decide not to answer that email today?!”) Take it slowly. Think of your top three non-negotiables and practice how you will share them with your clients.

TIP #3: EXPAND YOUR VIBRATIONAL ENERGY - Your vibration is your natural energetic state of being; it represents the energetic quality of how you move through the world. Successful people tend to operate at higher vibrational energies which exude joy, love and ease, whereas lower vibrational energies feel heavy and stressful. If you want a brand voice that has “success” and “confidence” written all over it, work on expanding your vibrational energy.

TIP #4: BUILD A SIGNATURE BODY OF WORK - Remember, friend: There’s only ONE you with your breadth of knowledge and experience. No one else on this planet has acquired expertise in the same way as you have, so when you compile your expertise into a teachable/coachable/shareable framework, you release out into the world a signature body of work that people can only access within your business model. Now that’s a powerful way to express your voice.

TIP #5: BRING YOUR BRAND TO LIFE - In the REL Impact brand, we believe that each of us has an authentic communication style. When you identify what it is, you can then use it to meaningfully represent your voice. In practice, this means that you do you! Imagine being able to market your business in ways that feel easy and joyful to you… That’s the effect of leaning into and leveraging your Communication Love Language. Just because other experts host their own podcasts, go live on social media or post goofy reels doesn’t mean that’s what will work for you.

TIP #6: BE QUIET - That’s right: you can use your voice without uttering a word. I don’t mean that you hide or go dark; this just means that you use your brilliant brain to thoughtfully and appropriately contribute to others’ conversations, or respond to the content they put out. Amplifying your own voice doesn’t always demand that you get loud. There are many quiet, yet impactful, ways to establish your unique expertise.

Here’s the gist: There is only one “right” way to build your brand voice – and that’s by doing it your way.

A successful model is to do a quick glance around at some of the options... and then make intentional decisions around how you want to amplify your own unique brand voice. Mimicking other experts is like trying to get a dog to gallop. It’s not only impossible; it’s a difficult, exhausting and unsuccessful approach.
