The Foundations of Expansion

Before your business was a tangible thing it was first a vision. You knew at the core of who you are that this business was meant to be. You could envision almost every part of it. So you went to work.

But as you started to bring your vision to life you hit a wall. Things didn’t take off the way you envisioned. Clients were harder to find than you anticipated. Your goals took (or maybe are still taking) a long time to reach.

If this speaks to you, then you are likely left asking yourself, “What am I doing wrong?”

Here it is:

A vision without a plan only goes so far.

With over 20 years of business experience, I have also made this mistake. Let me tell you my story and how you can ensure you don’t end up in the same boat.

I had the vision to bring heart-centered female entrepreneurs together to connect, share, and grow together in life and business. This vision was strong and I could see it so clearly. So I went to work.

Sheer Impact (originally known as Rise Together) launched with a bang and tremendous success. It was a conference that did exactly what I envisioned the event would do. Women from all over Colorado came together to connect and grow. The front-end experience was magical and transformative for attendees. Exactly what I had imagined for the event itself, and for them.

So why isn’t Sheer Impact/Rise Together still around? Because the concept and scale plan flopped. My vision alone couldn’t carry the business further. It wasn’t enough. I needed a plan in order to scale the concept further, in order to really expand its impact.

Although this is sad news for Sheer Impact/Rise Together, it's great news for you because I learned through this experience and then created a framework for other business owners to use to expand their businesses. I call it the 4 Foundations of Expansion:

Management

Establishing this foundation is about creating a structure for running your business effectively and efficiently. You focus on what you’re doing and when, while constructing the systems that keep your business moving forward.

Marketing

Early on in your business, you can clamber along to find clients, but expansion requires you to get strategic with your marketing efforts. This means taking your brand and plan to the next level.

Mastery

Expansion demands that you establish your authority as an expert in the industry and get really great at communicating it. This is the time to become known for what you do and what you stand for. Sure, I ran a great conference, but because I never claimed my expertise in a specific way that compelled others to take action in working with me, the model wasn’t sustainable.

Money

Plain and simple: The math of your business has to work in order to step into full expansion. This means that you develop a scale plan that encompasses the right audience, offers, and numbers relative to your goals.

With a focus on these four foundations, I know that Sheer Impact/Rise Together would have grown into an international brand/company and better yet… community.

While I didn’t figure all of this out until it was too late for that brand, I’m putting these principles to work for REL Impact. And you can put them to work for your business, too.
